Biography

Michael Grenfell is a Lecturer in Environmental and Water Science in the Department of Earth Sciences. Michael holds a PhD in fluvial geomorphology from the University of Exeter, MSc (cum laude) in wetland science from UKZN, and BSc Honours and BSc degrees from the University of Natal. He holds a professional higher education teaching qualification (Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice) from the University of Gloucestershire, where he spent two years as a lecturer prior to joining UWC. His current primary teaching focus is in the application of Geographical Information Science in water science and management. Michael’s research focuses on rivers and wetlands in semi-arid, sub-tropical and tropical environments. He combines a variety of approaches to study the hydro-geomorphic dynamics of these important systems, including:

• Spatial analysis and modelling using GIS and remotely-sensed data
• Field and laboratory analyses of morphology, sedimentology, and sedimentary processes
• Statistical and physics-based modelling of hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes

Michael maintains a keen interest in the philosophy and practice of river and wetland management and restoration, and has worked as a sub-contracted wetland specialist for Rio Tinto Richards Bay Minerals, the South African National Biodiversity Institute, AECI, Mondi Forests, and numerous South African Environmental Consultancies. His research on South African wetlands has been applied in a number of consultant-centred management tools.
