CURRENT RESEARCH INTEREST

  • Regolith geochemistry in semi arid / arid terrains, element dispersion plumes and enhancement of surface geochemical response by selective extraction techniques.
  • Application of alteration and lithogeochemical vectors in prospecting concealed ore mineralization.

 

RESEARCH FACILITIES/ INFRASTRUCTURE

  • Geochemistry unit hosts several modern analytical laboratories for research and education. Our capacities were significantly expanded by the establishment of an XRF and a GFAAS units. This facility was equipped with financial support from the University of the Western Cape and Panalytical.
  • Phillips PW 1480 wavelength dispersive x-ray spectrometer was installed in 2005 and currently runs on SUPERQ software. The Phillips PW 1480 uses side window X-Ray tubes and which are equipped with Rh, Mo, W and Au targets for providing optimal performance.
  • The GFAA spectral photometer, novAA 400 is a PC-controlled (WINAAS version 3.17.0) multielement automatic machine for sequential the determination of traces and ultra-traces of metals and semi-metals in liquid, solution and solid samples.
  • The wet chemistry lab hosts infrastructure capable of providing the state of the art selective and partial leaches using hydroxylamine hydrochloride, ammonium and sodium acetate etc for geochemical exploration purposes with a daily turnover rate of 100 samples per day/ element.

ONGOING REGOLITH GEOCHEMISTRY RESEARCH PROJECTS IN COLLABORATION WITH THE EXPLORATION & MINING INDUSTRY

The framework and geochemistry of regolith overlying the Kalplats PGE mineralisation in the Stella Greenstone belt.

Ongoing research involves developing conceptual models of element dispersion from bedrock/ mineralisation into the Kalahari sediments overlying the PGE mineralisation in the Stella Greenstone Belt. The research also looks into sampling and partial leaches techniques suitable for prospecting PGE’s in the region.

The geochemistry of regolith associated with the PGE mineralisation in the Rooiport prospect, in the Platreef.

Regolith in the Rooiport area is very diverse and ranges from in-situ regolith; saprock, saprolite, truncated laterites to alluvium/colluvium. Ongoing research aims to develop a regolith framework for the platreef area and partial leaches technique suitable for prospecting concealed PGE’s

Controls of element dispersion in regolith over the Au mineralisation at Goudplats, Abelscop & Bothmansrus, Amalia Greenstone Belt.

Geochemical studies in this site have been very diverse and involved possible use of regolith-, litho- and biogeochemistry in predicting concealed ore. See M.Sc theses by Ackon† (2001), Mshumi(2006) &Akinyemi(2007) and Okujeni et al. (2005).

Controls of element dispersion in regolith overlying the Morokweng Impact Structure

The project aims at developing conceptual regolith geochemical model, which explains the dispersion of mobile metal ions from melt sheet/ mineralisation underlying over 100m thick Kalahari sediments in the Morokweng Impact Structure (See M.Sc theses by Xu (2006) and Yang (2006).
